As far as placement of your mill, the ideal distance is probably around 150ft or more away from any buildings of any sort. If you can barricade it that's even better (things like sandbags). Just make sure you don't block off air to the motor. When making black powder there is always a chance for it to go off.

I know this from personal experience. I built my first ball mill and didn't have the speed optimized at first. Now, mine was smaller than your 17 pounder, but to make a 125 gram batch went from 51/5 hours down to 3 by increasing the speed 15 RPM. I imagine in a larger ball mill the time difference would be considerably more.

To grind a single chemical (vs. a mix like black powder) using a ball mill, fill your mill jar half full of hardened lead or brass grinding media, and 25% full of potassium nitrate. Turn the mill on and come back in an hour. Your nitrate should be light and fluffy. If not, continue grinding it 'til it's fine powder with no chunks or grains.

I've made some pretty good black powder using a coffee grinder and porter porter and pestle, but I was looking into getting a ball was going to get one of the cheap 70 6lb rock tumbler and modify it per skylighter's directions, but I would still need to get media to fill it half full, 200 1/2" balls.

Had some mesquite lump charcoal at the house and a rock tumbler from our favorite cheap Chinese tool outlet. Ground up the charcoal and sifted it with the finest sifter I could find. Weighed out the components and put them in the rubber rock polisher can with some cast lead 38 cal bullets (no lube) to make an impromptu ball mill.

Second the damage is smaller for a small mill or the other way round it's a disproportionately excessive crater for a bigger mill use a small mill.

I don't provide instructions on how to make your own black powder, Google can help with that, but I will tell you that a properly charged ball mill is the key for fast powerful black powder. Here is what you get with the Black Powder Kit: 5 lbs. of our milled Potassium Nitrate with no anticake added. A 15 value. 1 lbs. of our airfloat charcoal.

I'm not looking to make the hottest possible rocket imaginable however the tool maker recommends I use hot black powder. But I don't know what that means when it comes to Black Powder rocket fuel.
